About this event
Sur les traces d'Odette du Puigaudeau / في أثر أوديت دو بويغودو is on in the temporary gallery at the Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech from Saturday 3 October 2026 to Sunday 7 March 2027. Those dates sit on the museum's current exhibition page, on the CRT Visit Marrakech brief, and in the English press release dated for this show. The museum is closed Wednesday. Open days run 10:00 to 18:00, last entry 17:30, on museeyslmarrakech.com. Buy the QR ticket on tickets.jardinmajorelle.com. There is no door till.
Odette du Puigaudeau was born in Saint-Nazaire in 1894 and died in Rabat in 1991. The press release, CRT, and MAP coverage of the 2 October vernissage all treat this as the first exhibition devoted to her in Morocco, the country where she spent her last thirty years. Hayate Machache, head of collections at the Pierre Bergé Museum of Berber Arts and at mYSLm, curates with Monique Vérité, who wrote the 2001 biography Odette du Puigaudeau, une Bretonne au désert. Jasmin Oezcebi designed the rooms. She also designed the museum's Bert Flint and Théophile-Jean Delaye shows, the two earlier chapters in this Sahara-witness series. Director Alexis Sornin told MAP that this is the third chapter after Flint and Delaye.

More than 200 works and documents: photographs, drawings, watercolours, original plates, manuscripts, objects, radio archives, and documentary film. Sources named in the communiqué are the Pierre Bergé Museum of Berber Arts, the Fondation Jardin Majorelle, and private holdings, including Vérité's own collection. Drawings and plates by Odette and by Marion Sénones, her companion from 1931, sit in the same rooms. You hear radio tapes as you walk. Film clips include Théodore Monod and a griot song written for Odette. A nomad tent, the khaymat, is built inside the route, with saddles, chests, silver jewellery, Oualata clay dolls, and the women's hairstyles she called the masterpieces of Saharan women.
Three chapters. From Saint-Nazaire to Paris, 1894 to 1934: daughter of Pont-Aven painter Ferdinand du Puigaudeau, scientific illustrator, costume work, a stint at Jeanne Lanvin, seaman's papers in 1928, then the Paris bourse under a male byline. The call of the deserts, 1934 to 1961: on 28 November 1933 she and Sénones left Douarnenez on the lobster boat Belle-Hirondelle for Mauritania, unpaid and without an official mission. Later routes run Tiznit, the Tamanart valley, Foum el Hassan rock carvings, Chinguetti, Oualata, Timbuktu, and the 1937 azalaï salt caravan from Timbuktu to Taoudenni. Five years living with nomad camps. Books named in the dossier: Pieds nus à travers la Mauritanie (1936), La Grande foire des dattes (1937), Le Sel du désert (1940), then the ethnology treatise Arts et coutumes des Maures. Rabat, last port, 1961 to 1991: Moroccan radio, fieldwork, and from 1970 to 1977 the Prehistory Department at the Rabat Archaeological Museum. In 1964 she organised André Malraux's visit to Oued Tamanart, where she had already catalogued 114 engravings. Sénones died in Rabat in 1977. Odette in 1991.
