About Jemaa el-Fnaa

Jemaa el-Fnaa is the beating heart of Marrakech and a square like no other, recognised by UNESCO in 2008 as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity for the storytellers, musicians and performers who have gathered here for nearly a thousand years. Dating back to the founding of the city in the 11th century under the Almoravid dynasty, it remains the social, commercial and political centre of the medina. By day it is a relatively calm space of orange-juice carts, dried-fruit vendors and a few snake charmers, but everything changes when the sun drops behind the Koutoubia minaret around 6pm. After sunset, more than a hundred food stalls wheel into position in tight rows, assembling a temporary outdoor restaurant that seats thousands. Smoke rises from brochettes of lamb, beef, chicken and kefta, bowls of harira sell for around 10 to 15 dirhams, and the adventurous line up for snail soup (babbouche) and slow-cooked sheep head (bouzelouf), a dish beloved by locals rather than a tourist gimmick. Around the food, halqa performance circles form, where Gnawa musicians playing the bass guembri, acrobats and storytellers draw crowds until the square peaks between 8pm and 11pm. For visitors, Jemaa el-Fnaa is the one experience no trip to Marrakech can do without. Arrive hungry, walk the full food area before committing to a stall, and keep a handful of small change ready for the performers who make this living theatre so special. Most stalls break down after 1am and the square is swept clean by 3am, ready to begin the whole cycle again the next day.
